1 Campbell Carving (Old Site): Sand a Greenstone Pendant

Sand a Greenstone Pendant

I wish I had found a page like this when I started getting into carving greenstone.  I have put this together as a way to share what I have learnt about how to do it with all that are interested.  So this is all about how I go about sanding greenstone, or pounamu, or jade, or what ever you call it where you are from.

This post is all about showing sanding greenstone and how I go...

Sanding the Greenstone

Progress Photos from the beginning of sanding at P120 grit sand paper through to the finish of sanding at P1200.

At each stage there is only what seems to be a small bit of progress with each sanding level but when you put the start and finish photos of the greenstone pendant side by side you can see the difference.

Finishing/Polishing
This is the most exciting part when the final beauty of the greentsone is revealed.

Here is what the greenstone pendant looks like.
I love the deep greens and black inclusions on this piece of greenstone.

  1. You dont need to go through the grits like that.
Finish grinding on 600 diamond wheel
    Sanding 240,400,600,1200

For rough polish like yours straight from 1200 is fine.

Thankfull i didnt start out following instructions like yours

    1. Yea I have worked out some of this stuff, by no means all of it. This page does need updating. What do you mean by straight from 1200 is fine. I am also interested in what tools, techniques and materials are used to achieve a proper polish.
